Description

A Large Doulton Lambeth Saltglazed Commemorative Jug William Maccall

A large Doulton Lambeth saltglazed water jug, which was believed to be made to commemorate, the writer William Maccall 1812-1888. The jug is formed with it being baluster in shape and with a shaped neck. The body of the jug is saltglazed. Around the body of the jug it has applied mouldings. They have a characters head in the centre of each and then a stylized motif around the edge. Around each of the motifs there is a short motto by William Maccall. Straight is the line of duty. Curved is the line of beauty. Follow the straight line thou shalt see. The curved line ever follow thee. These are done in black. The handle on the jug is a loop handle and raised above the top of the jug. The jug is marked to the base with impressed Doulton Lambeth stamp, and some other numbers. There is also the artist initials LB, which is for LF Bowen, I think. The jug dates to around 1880-1890.
